Pimenta

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Pimenta

a genus of usually strongly aromatic trees of the family Myrtaceae. There are about 15 species, distributed in tropical America and the West Indies. Two species are cultivated. The allspice (P. dioica; formerly, P. officinalis) has long been cultivated on Jamaica and in a number of tropical countries. The rapidly dried, unripe fruits yield a product called allspice, or pimento. Allspice has the taste of pepper and the aroma of a mixture of nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon. It is used in cooking, in canned foods, and in medicine. The fruits of the bayberry (P. racemosa) are used in perfumery, medicine, and cooking.
