Pimonenko, Nikolai Kornil’evich
Born Feb. 25 (Mar. 9), 1862, in Kiev; died there Mar. 13 (26), 1912. Ukrainian painter. From 1882 to 1884, Pimonenko studied with V. D. Orlovskii at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. He taught at the Kiev School of Drawing from 1884 to 1900. In 1899, Pimonenko joined the peredvizhniki (the “wanderers”—a progressive art movement), and in 1893 he began exhibiting with them. His paintings poetically depict the life and work of the Ukrainian people. Genre and landscape elements are often combined (as seen in Before the Storm, 1906, Museum of Ukrainian Art of the Ukrainian SSR, Kiev). Pimonenko also produced a number of dramatic, denunciatory canvases (for example, Victim of Fanaticism, 1899, Kharkov Museum of Art). REFERENCEGovdia, P. M. K. Pimonenko.
