Name Origin: Probably for the Pinal tribe of the Apaches, or for an Apache chief. Name means 'deer' in Apache; in Spanish it means 'pine' or possibly 'the Apaches who live in the pines.' Pine groves and deer can be found on nearby mountains. Area (sq mi): 5374.09 (land 5369.59; water 4.50). Pop per sq mi: 42.70. Pop 2005: 229,549. State rank: 3. Pop change: 2000-20005 27.70%; 1990-2000 54.40%. Pop 2000: 179,727 (White 58.80%; Black or African American 2.80%; Hispanic or Latino 29.90%; Asian 0.60%; Other 26.30%). Foreign born: 9.00%. Median age: 37.10. Income 2000: per capita $16,025; median household $35,856; Pop below poverty level: 16.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $17,651-$20,153. Unemployment 2004: 5.80%.
