In south-central AZ, southeast of Phoenix; organized Feb 1, 1875 (prior to statehood) from Pima County. Name Origin: Probably for the Pinal tribe of the Apaches, or for an Apache chief. Name means 'deer' in Apache; in Spanish it means 'pine' or possibly 'the Apaches who live in the pines.' Pine groves and deer can be found on nearby mountains.

Area (sq mi): 5374.09 (land 5369.59; water 4.50). Pop per sq mi: 42.70.
Pop 2005: 229,549. State rank: 3. Pop change: 2000-20005 27.70%; 1990-2000 54.40%. Pop 2000: 179,727 (White 58.80%; Black or African American 2.80%; Hispanic or Latino 29.90%; Asian 0.60%; Other 26.30%). Foreign born: 9.00%. Median age: 37.10.
Income 2000: per capita $16,025; median household $35,856; Pop below poverty level: 16.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $17,651-$20,153.
Unemployment 2004: 5.80%. Change from 2000: 0.70%. Median travel time to work: 27.40 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 40.10%.

    A third tree, a massive longbeak eucalyptus in Pinal County, Arizona, died after vandals set fire to its trunk (see Vandals Kill Champ, page 16).
    The district is located in the north central portion of Pinal County, Arizona, approximately 35 miles east of the Phoenix metropolitan area.
    Vandals have killed the nation's largest longbeak eucalyptus, a 498-point behemoth in Pinal County, Arizona.
