On the central eastern border of MN, northeast of Saint Paul; established Mar 1, 1856 (prior to statehood) from unorganized lands; annexed Buchanan County in 1861. Name Origin: For the extensive forests of red (Norway) and white pine, and possibly for the Pine lakes and river in the county.
