Name Origin: For the extensive forests of red (Norway) and white pine, and possibly for the Pine lakes and river in the county. Area (sq mi): 1434.57 (land 1411.04; water 23.52). Pop per sq mi: 20.20. Pop 2005: 28,485. State rank: 37. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.40%; 1990-2000 24.80%. Pop 2000: 26,530 (White 93.10%; Black or African American 1.30%; Hispanic or Latino 1.80%; Asian 0.30%; Other 4.00%). Foreign born: 1.10%. Median age: 38.40. Income 2000: per capita $17,445; median household $37,379; Pop below poverty level: 11.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,757-$22,718. Unemployment 2004: 6.60%. Change from 2000: -1.40%.
