Pink Elephant
(1) (Pink Elephant Inc., The Netherlands, www.pinkelephant.com) An IT service management provider founded in 1979 with operations throughout North America and the Asia Pacific region. Specializing in education, conferences, consulting and hosting services, the company promotes IT management best practices, and specifically the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL). ITIL was developed by the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA, now known as the Office of Government Commerce), a U.K. government organization that has been adopted worldwide as a de facto standard of IT best practice. See ITIL.

(2) (Phil's Pink Elephant) Where Alan Freedman, author of this encyclopedia, first went to work. In 1955, at the age of 13 (pretending to be 16), he was a short order cook and curb boy for this fast food drive-in restaurant in Harrisburg, PA. In 1955, Phil's Pink Elephant was the first drive-in in the country to offer a 15 cent hamburger (Freedman's mother gave Phil the idea). The 15 cent hamburger was very popular, but the place folded a year later. See About this encyclopedia.

There is the man whom we all know, stupid, unimaginative, whose brain is bitten numbly by numb maggots; who walks generously with wide-spread, tentative legs, falls frequently in the gutter, and who sees, in the extremity of his ecstasy, blue mice and pink elephants.
