Pipinashvili, Konstantin Konstantinovich 

Born Sept. 19 (Oct. 2), 1912, in Kutaisi; died Apr. 15, 1969, in Tbilisi. Soviet film director. People’s Artist of the Georgian SSR (1967). Member of the CPSU from 1940.

In 1936, Pipinashvili graduated from the department of directing of the State Institute of Cinematography; in 1939 he completed a two-year directing course at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography, a type of academy, where he studied under S. M. Eisenstein. He worked in Georgian cinema, directing the films Kadzhana after N. Lamauri (1941), The Bridge (1942), The Golden Path (1945), The Poet’s Cradle after the novella Experiences of the Past (1947) by A. Tsereteli, The Mystery That Spanned Two Oceans after G. B. Adamov (1957), Mayakovsky’s Beginnings after V. V. Mayakovsky’s novella I Myself (1959), and Children of the Sea (1964). Pipinashvili was author or coauthor of the screenplays of most of the films he directed. From 1948 to 1954 he directed the dubbing of films of other Union republics into Georgian. He was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and a medal.
