Pirsson, Louis V. (Valentine) (1860–1919) geologist; born in New York City. He taught at the Sheffield Scientific School (Yale) (1882–1919), while spending summers doing fieldwork in Montana and New Hampshire for the U.S. Geological Survey. A pioneer in petrology, he devised a new system of classifying igneous rocks.
