Name Origin: For the Piscataquis River, which runs through it; from an Abnaki Indian word probably meaning 'divided tidal river.' Area (sq mi): 4377.36 (land 3966.22; water 411.14). Pop per sq mi: 4.50. Pop 2005: 17,674. State rank: 16. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.50%; 1990-2000 -7.60%. Pop 2000: 17,235 (White 97.50%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 0.50%; Asian 0.30%; Other 1.60%). Foreign born: 1.90%. Median age: 42.10. Income 2000: per capita $14,374; median household $28,250; Pop below poverty level: 14.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,700-$23,392. Unemployment 2004: 6.80%. Change from 2000: 0.10%.
