Facilities: Visitor center, campgrounds, picnic sites, boat ramp, trails, ORV area, scenic drives. Activities: Camping, fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, ORV riding, mountain biking, horseback riding, interpretive programs, rock climbing, berry picking. Special Features: The Cradle of Forestry in America, an outdoor museum on former grounds of George Washington Vanderbilt's estate, which depicts the history of forest conservation and honors leaders in its development; Looking Glass Falls, an unbroken rush of whitewater 30 feet wide and 60 feet high; Appalachian National Scenic Trail (see entry in national trails section); Roan Mountain Gardens, with spring displays of purple rhododendron; Shining Rock Wilderness, named for a rock outcrop filled with quartz deposits.
