Pistole

(Spanish pistola), an old Spanish gold coin, equal to a double escudo. Minted in the 16th through 18th centuries, it had a gold content of 6.20 g until 1786 and 5.92 g thereafter. In the 17th century the designation “pistole” was used in France, Italy, Germany, and certain other countries for almost all gold coins that were equal in weight to the Spanish pistole. The pistole went out of circulation at the end of the 18th century.
