In east-central NC, northeast of Goldsboro; organized Apr 24, 1760 (prior to statehood) from Beaufort County. Name Origin: For William Pitt (1708-78), 1st Earl of Chatham, known as "the Great Commoner" for his support of the American colonies before the Revolutionary War.

Area (sq mi): 654.77 (land 651.58; water 3.19). Pop per sq mi: 218.80.
Pop 2005: 142,570. State rank: 16. Pop change: 2000-20005 6.60%; 1990-2000 24.00%. Pop 2000: 133,798 (White 61.00%; Black or African American 33.60%; Hispanic or Latino 3.20%; Asian 1.10%; Other 3.20%). Foreign born: 3.60%. Median age: 30.40.
Income 2000: per capita $18,243; median household $32,868; Pop below poverty level: 20.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,331-$25,746.
