Pittman, Key (1872–1940) U.S. senator; born in Vicksburg, Miss. He joined the Alaskan gold rush (1897–1901) and was a lawyer who specialized in mining law. He served in the U.S. Senate (Dem., Nev.; 1913–40). As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he strongly supported President Franklin Roosevelt's foreign policy. Above all, he looked after the interests of the silver-mining states and used his legal skills to see that the price of silver was kept up through government purchases.
