On the central southern border of VA, south of Lynchburg; organized Nov 6, 1766 from Halifax County. Name Origin: For William Pitt (the Elder; 1708-78), 1st Earl of Chatham, prime minister of England and supporter of the American colonies; with the addition of -sylvania 'Pitt's woods.'

Area (sq mi): 978.18 (land 970.76; water 7.42). Pop per sq mi: 63.70.
Pop 2005: 61,854. State rank: 29. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.20%; 1990-2000 10.90%. Pop 2000: 61,745 (White 74.40%; Black or African American 23.70%; Hispanic or Latino 1.20%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.10%). Foreign born: 1.00%. Median age: 39.60.
Income 2000: per capita $16,991; median household $35,153; Pop below poverty level: 11.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,486-$23,310.
