plane of polarization [′plān əv ‚pō·lə·rə′zā·shən]
(electromagnetism)
Plane containing the electric vector and the direction of propagation of electromagnetic wave.

This filter is coupled to a parallel wire polariser forming a multi-element device that rotates at 5 rpm to provide the required rotating plane of polarization.
One of the interesting consequences of this property of linear polarization is that the plane of polarization of the linearly polarized light is tilted as it travels through a magnetic field.
Spots with an "up" magnetization rotate the light's plane of polarization in one direction, while "down" spots rotate it in the opposite direction.
