Plaquemine Lock State Historic Site Location: Off LA 1 in downtown Plaquemine in Iberville Parish, 13 miles south of Baton Rouge, on historic Main Street. Facilities: Visitor center, museum, historic structure, exhibits, observation tower, restroom. Activities: Guided tours, interpretive programs. Special Features: At the time of its completion in 1909, Plaquemine Lock on the Mississippi River had the highest water lift of any lock in the world. It was engineered by Colonel George W. Goethals, who also designed the Panama Canal. The site includes the original lockhouse and a working scale model of the lock.
