plasma torch [′plaz·mə ‚tȯrch]
(engineering)
A torch in which temperatures as high as 50,000°C are achieved by injecting a plasma gas tangentially into an electric arc formed between electrodes in a chamber; the resulting vortex of hot gases emerges at very high speed through a hole in the negative electrode, to form a jet for welding, spraying of molten metal, and cutting of hard rock or hard metals.

Plasma arc melting furnaces utilize an arc in a non-reactive gas as a heat source that is applied to the melting of reactive and refractory metals.
The plasma arc can be changed from a negative polarity, which is used to initiate heating and melt fluxes, to a positive polarity plasma to enhance sulfur and oxygen removal and aid alloy recovery.
and Professor Alex McLean, University of Toronto, were discussing plasma arc furnaces in McLean's office.
