A 72-year-old man with a history of Parkinson's disease and newly diagnosed Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia was admitted to the hospital after he had undergone treatment with plasmapheresis and rituximab, a chimeric monoclonal antibody (dose 2 of 4). Nonspecific immunoglobulin and plasmapheresis should be considered for patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome but are not indicated for patients with paralysis due to damage of anterior horn cells (30). According to the authors, plasmapheresis should only be considered in cases where the patient does not respond to intravenous steroids. |
