In east-central NE, northwest of Omaha; original county; organized as Loup County Jan 26, 1856 (prior to statehood); name changed 1859. Name Origin: For the Platte River, which forms part of its southern border; from French for 'flat' or 'still.'

Area (sq mi): 689.08 (land 678.07; water 11.01). Pop per sq mi: 46.10.
Pop 2005: 31,262. State rank: 11. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.30%; 1990-2000 6.20%. Pop 2000: 31,662 (White 92.00%; Black or African American 0.40%; Hispanic or Latino 6.50%; Asian 0.40%; Other 5.00%). Foreign born: 4.10%. Median age: 35.80.

    On the northwestern border of MO, northwest of Kansas City; organized Dec 31, 1838 from Platte Purchase. Name Origin: For the Platte River, which runs through it; French 'flat' or 'still.'
