On northwestern border of WV, northeast of Parkersburg; organized Mar 29, 1851 from Ritchie, Tyler, and Wood counties. Name Origin: For James Pleasants, Jr. (1769-1836), U.S. representative from VA (1811-19), U.S. senator (1819-22), and governor (1822-25).

Area (sq mi): 134.59 (land 130.73; water 3.86). Pop per sq mi: 56.40.
Pop 2005: 7,376. State rank: 52. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.80%; 1990-2000 -0.40%. Pop 2000: 7,514 (White 98.00%; Black or African American 0.50%; Hispanic or Latino 0.40%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.10%). Foreign born: 0.50%. Median age: 38.90.
Income 2000: per capita $16,920; median household $32,736; Pop below poverty level: 13.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,249-$25,255.
