Even low-level exposure to asbestos results in the thickening of pleural membranes, leading to difficulty in breathing.
Breathing lower levels of asbestos may result in changes called plaques in the pleural membranes.
Both pleural surfaces invest the lungs, and are normally separated by a thin layer of pleural fluid, which acts as a lubricant, reducing the friction developed between the opposed pleural membranes during the continuous expansion and contraction of the lung tissue during ventilation.
