Earle, Pliny

Earle, Pliny (1809–92) physician, psychiatrist; born in Leicester, Mass. He wrote extensively on current practices in mental institutions in Europe and the United States, and headed institutions in Frankford, Pa. (1840) and New York City (1844). He was a cofounder of the American Medical Association (1847).

The story goes that when Samuel Slater couldn't get his imported carding machine to work at his mill in Pawtucket, he called on Leicester mill owner Pliny Earle for help.
Pliny Earle, the famed Quaker "alienist" (psychiatrist) from Leicester, strongly backed the asylum idea.
Samuel Slater, it appears, couldn't get his equipment operating at the mill in Pawtucket and came to Leicester for help from Pliny Earle, who already was manufacturing hand cards here.
