Plum Tree Island National Wildlife Refuge Address: c/o Back Bay NWR 4005 Sandpiper Rd Virginia Beach, VA 23456 Phone: 757-721-2412; Fax: 757-721-6141; Web: www.fws.gov/northeast/va/pti.htm Established: 1974. Location: Southwest corner of the Chesapeake Bay, just north of Hampton, Virginia. Special Features: Area was used as a gunnery and bombing practice range until the late 1950s. It remains an emergency jettison zone for the Air Force. Habitats: 3,450 acres of salt marsh, shrub scrub and wooded habitats. Access: Island is saturated with unexploded bombs and other munitions and is closed to public entry. Wild life: Waterfowl, marshbirds, and shorebirds. See other parks in Virginia.
