On NE border of CA and NV; organized Mar 18, 1854, from Butte County. Name Origin: Spanish 'feathers,' for the Feather River, once known asRio de las Plumas . Named by John A. Sutter, first settler in the Sacramento Valley, for the quantities of feathers found all around it with which the Indians decorated themselves and made blankets.
