On NE border of CA and NV; organized Mar 18, 1854, from Butte County. Name Origin: Spanish 'feathers,' for the Feather River, once known as Rio de las Plumas. Named by John A. Sutter, first settler in the Sacramento Valley, for the quantities of feathers found all around it with which the Indians decorated themselves and made blankets.

Area (sq mi): 2613.48 (land 2553.69; water 59.78). Pop per sq mi: 8.40.
Pop 2005: 21,477. State rank: 50. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.10%; 1990-2000 5.50%. Pop 2000: 20,824 (White 88.70%; Black or African American 0.60%; Hispanic or Latino 5.70%; Asian 0.50%; Other 7.00%). Foreign born: 2.50%. Median age: 44.20.
Income 2000: per capita $19,391; median household $36,351; Pop below poverty level: 13.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $25,939-$28,013.
Unemployment 2004: 9.40%. Change from 2000: 1.00%. Median travel time to work: 19.50 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 13.20%.
