On central eastern border of WV; organized Dec 21, 1821 from Pendleton, Randolph, and Greenbrier counties (WV) and Bath County (in VA). Name Origin: For Indian princess Pocahontas (1595?-1617), daughter of Chief Powhatan (1550?-1618), whom she convinced to spare the life of VA colonist John Smith (c.1580-1631)
