Podvysotskaia, Ol’ga Nikolaevna 

Born Nov. 30 (Dec. 12), 1884, in Eniseisk; died Dec. 1, 1958, in Leningrad. Soviet dermatologist and venereologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939) and Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1944). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1945).

Podvysotskaia graduated from the St. Petersburg Women’s Medical Institute in 1911. She headed the subdepartments of skin diseases and venereology at the Leningrad Institute for the Advanced Training of Physicians from 1927 to 1938 and at the First Leningrad Medical Institute from 1938 to 1957; from 1930 to 1951 she was also the scientific director of the Leningrad Scientific Research Skin and Venereologic Institute. Her principal works dealt with the origin, clinical aspects, and treatment of tuberculosis of the skin, pyodermatitis, dermatomycosis, eczema, and neurodermatitis. Podvysotskaia helped launch the functional trend in dermatology and founded a school of skin specialists and venereologists. She was a deputy to the second convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. She was awarded an Order of Lenin, three other orders, and several medals.
