Poeni
ancient Roman name for Phoenicians who migrated to North Africa and during the 12th to seventh centuries B.C. founded the colonies of Utica, Carthage, and Leptis Magna, among others. The language of the Poeni was a dialect of Phoenician. The name given to the wars between Rome and Carthage—the Punic Wars—derives from “Poeni.” Want to thank TFD for its existence?
