Poinsett County, Arkansas County Courthouse 401 Market St Harrisburg, AR 72432 Phone: (870) 578-5333 In northeastern AR, northwest of Memphis, TN; organized Feb 28, 1838 from Greene County. Name Origin: For Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779-1851), SC statesman and secretary of war (1837-41). He introduced the cultivation of the poinsettia flower to the U.S., having imported it from Mexico after he was a U.S. minister there (1825-29). Area (sq mi): 763.39 (land 757.74; water 5.65). Pop per sq mi: 33.50. Pop 2005: 25,349. State rank: 27. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.00%; 1990-2000 3.90%.
