a narrow strip of land projecting into a sea or lake from the mainland peninsula [pə′nin·sə·lə] (geography) A body of land extending into water from the mainland, sometimes almost entirely separated from the mainland except for an isthmus. Peninsula a body of land surrounded on three sides by water, with the fourth side connected to a continent or island. In most cases peninsulas are geologically part of a continent.
