(also pointe work), dancing on the tips of the toes (sur les pointes). Point work by the female dancer is one of the main elements of the classical dance, requiring special ballet shoes with stiffened toes—point shoes. It acquired increasing importance during the period of the romantic ballet, in which it served as a means of creating a certain image.
