Pokrovskii, Igor’ Aleksandrovich
Born Mar. 4, 1926, in Moscow. Soviet architect. Became a member of the CPSU in 1955. Pokrovskii studied at the Moscow Architectural Institute with B. S. Mezentsev from 1945 to 1950. His urban designs are marked by a compositional diversity that enlivens the urban environment. Pokrovskii collaborated on the following designs in Moscow: ten-to 14-story apartment houses on Semenovskaia Embankment (1952–56), Krasnopresnenskaia subway station (1955), the Palace of Pioneers and Schoolchildren on Lenin Hills (1959–63; State Prize of the USSR, 1967), and the new building of the Moscow Art Theater on Tver’ Boulevard (1966–72). He also participated in the planning and construction of Moscow’s satellite city—Zelenograd (since 1962; chief architect, since 1964). Pokrovskii helped design the monument honoring the defenders of Moscow on the Leningrad Highway outside Zelenograd (1967; sculptor E. A. Shteiman, painter A. G. Shteiman).
