(astronomy)
Any of the bright areas covering the poles of Mars, believed to be composed of frozen carbon dioxide and water-ice.
(hydrology)
An ice sheet centered at one of the poles of the earth.

The Martian polar caps contain hundreds of meters of layers composed of mixed ice and dust, and scientists have speculated that these layers formed in response to variations in orbital characteristics like the tilt of Mars' rotational axis, which controls the intensity of the seasons.
The research chimes with deep-sea isotope records that give insights into how Earth got its polar caps.
One American scientist recently published his predictions in which he claimed that the polar caps would be all but gone in no more than 10-15 years.
