| An Arab League mission headed by Moussa held four days of meetings in Beirut last month, in the second such outing devoted to resolving the political deadlock. The UNSC acted because of the political deadlock in Lebanon, where Syria's allies, including Hizbullah, blocked approval of the court in the parliament. Subsequent months have been marked by a procession of remarkable events that have included inter alia massive street protests, dissolution of parliament, the boycotting of new elections by opposition parties, the breakdown of key political institutions and mechanisms in the face of crisis as well as an extraordinary and seemingly unconstitutional intervention by the palace aimed to break a perceived political deadlock. |
