Polk, Sarah (b. Childress) (1803–91) First Lady; born in Murfreesboro, Tenn. She married James K. Polk in 1824. Well-educated, she served as Polk's personal secretary and the two often worked together until late at night. Polk died two months after his presidency, but she remained admired and respected by both sides during the Civil War and afterward.
