Polkovnikov, Vladimir Ivanovich 

Born May 28 (June 10), 1906, in the village of Teriaeva Sloboda, now Teria-evo, Volokolamsk Raion, Moscow Oblast. Soviet film director. Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1969).

Polkovnikov graduated from the 1905 Memorial Moscow Art School in 1930. In 1931 he became an animator for Union Film Current Events, and in 1936 a director in the Union Animated Cartoon film studio. From 1943 to 1946 he worked in the Military Film studio.

Polkovnikov’s films have included Political Satire Journal No. 1 (1938; with other directors), Limpopo (1940), Barmalei (1941), The Peacock’s Tail (1947), Little Greyneck (1948), The Magic Store (1953; with the director L. A. Amal’rik), The Enchanted Boy (1956; with A. G. Snezhko-Blotskaaia), The Braggart Ant (1961), The Great Roach (1963), Nargis (1966), We Are Looking for a Blot (1969), and Where Are You Flying, Vitar? (1971). Many of his films have received prizes at international film festivals. He has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and several medals.
