Polya, George (1887–1985) mathematician; born in Budapest, Hungary. Emigrating to America for professional reasons (1940), this noted teacher settled at Stanford University (1940–53) and specialized in probability, complex analysis, and combinational theory. Author of ten books, including How to Solve It, he also wrote over 250 articles on mathematics.
