Although the purple pigments in fruits and vegetables, called anthocyanins, are usually considered the bioactive phytochemicals, Metzger found that other phytochemicals, called polyacetylene compounds, were responsible for the anti-inflammatory effects in his scientific model.
Among these conducting polymers, such as polyaniline (PANI), polypyrrole (PPy), polythiophene, polyacetylene, and polyphenylenevinylene, PANI has been most extensively studied owing to its low cost, environmental stability, good processability, and reversible control of conductivity both by protonation and charge-transfer doping [6, 7].
But polyacetylene has one important flaw: It decomposes quickly in air.
