Polyclitus the Younger
Dates of birth and death unknown. Ancient Greek architect. Polyclitus the Younger worked in Epidaurus in the fourth century B.C. His works included the Thymele, or tholos, which is round in plan and has a Doric colonnade on the exterior and a Corinthian colonnade on the interior. He was also the architect of a theater (350–330 B.C.) which accommodated 14,000 spectators. The theater is distinguished by the beauty of its overall composition (with a natural landscape in the background) and its individual architectural elements (the grand portals of the passages separating the skene from the theatron). The excellent acoustics result from the special shape of the theatron and from resonators under the seats. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
