The polyenes cause the fungal cell to die by intercalating into ergosterol-containing membranes, the major sterol in fungal membrane, to form channels and destroy the proton gradient in the cell with leakage of cytoplasmic content (30,31). Like the quinones, these polyenes have counterparts in natural photosynthesis molecules. |
