Pomerantsev, Illiodor Ivanovich
Born Aug. 17 (29), 1847, in Orel Province; died May 1, 1921, in Petrograd. Russian astronomer-geodesist; general of the infantry (1914). Pomerantsev graduated from the Konstantin Land Surveying Institute in 1867 and the Military Topographical School in 1869. From 1880 to 1888 he was chief of the Tashkent Observatory. In 1891 he became a docent and then a professor at the Forestry Institute in St. Petersburg. In 1894 he became head of the geodetic division of the Military Topographical Department, in 1903 head of the Military Topographical School, and in 1911 chief of the Corps of Military Topographers. From 1881 to 1886, together with the Russian astronomer and specialist in gravime-try P. K. Zalesskii, he determined the longitudes of a series of Middle Asian cities. In 1907, Pomerantsev was the first in Russia to outline a program for construction of first-order triangulation. He wrote several works on seismology. REFERENCESLoginova, G. P., and V. G.
