Pomeroy, Marcus Mills (“Brick”) (1833–96) newspaper editor/publisher, propagandist; born in Elmira, N.Y. Working as a journeyman-printer turned journalist at several midwest papers, he settled in Wisconsin at the La Crosse Democrat (1860–66), and then in New York he published the New-York Democrat, which he sold to William M. Tweed (1870). Back at the New York Democrat (1876–80), he worked for the Greenback cause, organized, promoted, and was president of the Atlantic-Pacific Railway Tunnel (1890), and published the general news monthly, Advance Thought. Known for his sensational, intensely personal, and independent journalism, he gained national attention for championing the political underdog and the people.
