Ponce de León, Juan
Born circa 1460 in Tierra de Campos, Palencia; died 1521 in Havana. Spanish conquistador. Ponce de León accompanied Columbus on his expedition to America in 1492–93. In 1508 the detachment he headed conquered Puerto Rico, of which he became governor, and in the same year he founded the city of San Juan. In 1513 he discovered the Florida Peninsula. He waged wars to exterminate the native Indian population. In 1521, Florida Indians routed his detachment, and he himself was mortally wounded in combat. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
