Nuphar
a genus of aquatic plants of the family Nymph aeaceae. They are perennial grasses with rhizomes and leathery, cordate leaves on long petioles that float on the water surface. The flowers are solitary and on long stalks, with four or five large yellow sepals and numerous small petals. There are many sta-mens. The fruit is fleshy and has many seeds. There are approximately ten species (according to other sources, 25), distributed in the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere. Of the two species found in the USSR, the water lily, or brandybottle (Nuphar luted), grows in thickets in standing or slow-moving waters. Its rhizomes contain alkaloids, tannins, and starch. The yellow water lily, the least yellow water lily (N. pumila), and spatterdock (N. adventa) are cultivated as ornamentals. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
