Ponomarev, Aleksandr Andreevich 

Born Oct. 5 (17), 1876, in Moscow; died there in October 1941. Participant in the revolutionary movement in Russia, a leader of the struggle for the establishment of Soviet power in the Stavropol’ region. Member of the Communist Party from 1917. Son of an office worker.

Ponomarev graduated from the faculty of law of Moscow University. In 1896 he joined the Social Democratic movement; he was repeatedly arrested and exiled. In 1915 he began working as manager of the statistics department of the Stavropol’ provincial zemstvo board. After the February Revolution of 1917, Ponomarev was chairman of the Stavropol’ organization of the RSDLP (Bolshevik). In January 1918 he was chairman of the Council of People’s Commissars and people’s commissar of internal affairs and labor of Stavropol’ Province. In 1918–19 he was manager of the economic statistics department of the People’s Commissariat of Agriculture of the RSFSR and participated in the work of the Oktiabr’skaia Revoliutsiia Agitation Train on the fronts. From 1920 to 1922 he was a representative of the People’s Commissariat of Agriculture in the Northern Caucasus. From 1922, Ponomarev was involved in soviet and scholarly work in the Central Statistical Board, the People’s Commissariat of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Inspection, and the Kolkhoz Center.
