In south-central OK, southeast of Oklahoma City; organized Nov 16, 1907 from Choctaw lands. Name Origin: Of Chickasaw origin; the name of a chief, said to mean 'cattails growing on the prairie.'

Area (sq mi): 725.45 (land 719.64; water 5.82). Pop per sq mi: 49.10.
Pop 2005: 35,346. State rank: 28. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.60%; 1990-2000 3.00%. Pop 2000: 35,143 (White 74.80%; Black or African American 2.10%; Hispanic or Latino 2.30%; Asian 0.50%; Other 21.70%). Foreign born: 1.20%. Median age: 35.70.
