In west-central MN, west of Saint Cloud; established Feb 20, 1862 from Pierce County, which was abolished the same year. Name Origin: For explorer Gen. John Pope (1822-92), career army officer in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War.

On the southeastern border of IL; organized Jan 10, 1816 (prior to statehood) from Johnson and Gallatin counties. Name Origin: For Nathaniel Pope (1784-1850), first territorial secretary of IL Territory (1809-16) and U.S. district judge for IL (1819-50).
