Popkov, Petr Sergeevich
Born Jan. 23, 1903, in Vladimir Oblast; died Oct. 1, 1950. Soviet party official. Member of the Communist Party from 1925. Son of a worker. Popkov graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Communal Services Engineering in 1937. He held Komsomol and managerial posts from 1925 and was chairman of the Lenin raion soviet in Leningrad in 1937–38. He was vice-chairman of the Leningrad city soviet from 1938 and its chairman from 1939 to 1946. Popkov was one of the organizers and leaders of the defense of Leningrad in the Great Patriotic War (1941–45). He served as first secretary of the Leningrad oblast and city committees of the ACP (Bolshevik) from 1946 to 1949 and was elected a candidate member of the Central Committee at the Eighteenth Party Congress. He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Patriotic War First Class, and various medals. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
