Popocatépetl

(Aztec, “smoking mountain”), a volcano in the Transverse Volcanic Axis of southern Mexico, 65 km southeast of Mexico City. Elevation, 5,452 m. Frequent eruptions occurred in the 16th and 17th centuries. Weak volcanic activity resumed in 1920 but was replaced by strong fumarolic activity that continued until 1927. The slopes of Popocatépetl are covered with oak and pine forests up to an elevation of 3,800 m; they are devoid of any form of vegetation between 3,800 and 4,560 m. Above 4,560 m there are permanent snow and glaciers.
