Popov, Ivan Semenovich 

Born Nov. 10 (22), 1888, in the village of Vasil’evskoe, Volokolamsk District, Moscow Province; died Feb. 1, 1964, in Moscow. Soviet zootechnician. Academician of the V. I. Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1956).

In 1913, Popov graduated from the Moscow Institute of Agriculture, where he was an assistant from 1914 to 1919. He worked at the University of Saratov from 1919 to 1921 and at the Moscow Higher Zootechnical Institute from 1921 to 1929, where on his initiative the first subdepartment of animal feeding in the USSR was organized in 1921. From 1930 to 1933 he worked at the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Livestock Breeding. In 1937 he became a professor at the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy.

Popov’s principal works are devoted to the study of fodder resources in the USSR, to the nutritional evaluation of fodder products, and to various aspects of feeding agricultural animals, such as methods of establishing feeding norms, the application of advances in chemistry to feeding, and protein feeding. A number of works deal with various aspects of dairy and beef cattle raising, pedigree breeding, the origin of domestic animals, and the methodology of zootechnical research. Popov was awarded 2 gold medals at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition, the Lenin Prize (1959), and two orders.
